T-2, 3, or 4 days until school starts! Excited!?.....yah, I don't think that is the only emotion I am feeling either! And that's okay! The feelings we all have (adults and kids) are normal. Keep reminding yourself this. AND remind yourself that we are all in this together--however cliche that may sound.
This weekend, make sure you are taking time to relax and mentally prep yourself for the coming week. Know that it will look different, read whatever documents your school has sent so that you and your kiddo(s) have an idea of what is going on, and know that school staff are there for your kiddo(s). In saying this, try not to fall into the "WHAT IF's"....some examples of "WHAT IF's" could include:
WHAT IF I misplace my mask!?
WHAT IF I have symptoms of a cold or even COVID?!
WHAT IF I sneeze in class or at school and everyone looks at me?!
WHAT IF we go back to virtual learning!?
WHAT IF I have so much anxiety that I can't go to school or am scared to send my kid(s) to school!?
The list probably could go on for most of us. Again, NORMAL. Most of us are having these thoughts. The important thing is to recognize you are having these thoughts, remind yourself that it is normal, and remind yourself that you need to take it one day at a time, to trust school staff, and what will be will be.
RIDE THE COVID WAVE...was recently said in a meeting I had this week. When I heard it, I laughed. But, realized how true it was. We need to RIDE THE WAVE of our thoughts and let them come and go (kind of like clouds in the sky or leaves floating down a stream), we need to RIDE THE WAVE with our emotions and know that they will come and go, and we need to RIDE THE WAVE with whatever situation presents itself to us and take the situations as they come calmly.
If your feelings of anxiety are overpowering your ability to function and do daily tasks, please reach out to someone you trust or a local counselling agency (for counselling or psychotherapy). If you are worried about your kiddo, reach out to the school counsellor or child's classroom teacher to get the school counsellor involved. School counsellors and certified counsellors or psychologists have been trained in evidence-based treatments and programs to help you and/or your kiddo during this challenging time! :)
